Frequently Asked Questions

How was Cocosurf born?

Cocosurf is the story of a couple and a shared love for surfing! In 2019, after 7 years of teaching and/or administrative work in various organizations (clubs, private schools), Louise and I wanted to create a school that reflects us, without the issues and shortcomings sometimes observed in other schools.
As for the name of the school, it comes from our unconditional love for Coconut trees! This tree symbolizes many things we seek in surfing: warmth, travel, escape, and the seaside...
There are no palm trees in Charente-Maritime, you might say? Well, that’s our little touch of humor because learning to surf also involves self-deprecation!

What are the values of the school?

  1. instructors always in the water to ensure your safety
  2. no one is left behind: gifted or struggling, everyone gets maximum personalized advice
  3. humor in every lesson, because we're here for fun above all else
  4. pedagogy and empathy, everyone should progress at their own pace

What is the teaching approach at Cocosurf?

We adapt our lessons as much as possible to our audience, and there is no typical lesson plan.
At the beginning of each lesson, after assessing the conditions, warming up, and explaining the day's safety rules, we define one or more objectives for the session.
In case of varying levels within the same class, each person will have specific goals and exercises.
During each exercise, apprentice surfers receive personalized advice to improve their surfing.
2 to 3 times per lesson, we return to the shore to evaluate everyone's progress and share experiences to enhance understanding of the practice.
Finally, to finish in style, we often end our lessons with group surfing games. Surfing in class is about fun and sharing!

Where do the surfing lessons take place?

Most lessons take place on the Côte-Sauvage in La Tremblade, and occasionally towards Royan in case of strong swell.
Outside of July and August, we usually surf between the Coubre lighthouse and La Bouverie. In summer, we choose a spot further north with more walking but no boards to carry and especially an uncrowded spot. Enjoy the best waves!

Is the beach easily accessible?

The beach is accessible for children from 5 years old and for grandparents, depending on their fitness level. However, be aware that there's a 5 to 20-minute walk depending on the location, and a sand dune to climb!
For grandparents, our students are under our responsibility until the end of the lesson. So, if you wish, you can leave them with us and pick them up at the parking lot after the lesson.
Finally, we advise against carrying too much between the parking lot and the beach. Travel light!

From which month of the year can you surf in Charente-Maritime?

Enthusiasts can surf all year round in Charente-Maritime. From December to March (water between 10 and 13°C), you'll need surf boots and a hood.
If you're not yet a fully-fledged Viking, we recommend surfing between April and October when a full wetsuit is sufficient (water between 14 and 20°C). The school is open during these 7 months.

What qualifications and skills do the school's instructors have?

We all hold the BP JEPS Surf Activity diploma which allows us to teach surfing, bodyboarding, and paddleboarding. This one-year diploma requires a rigorous selection process and at least a very good level of surfing and years of experience and practice.
For safety, we are certified in First Aid (PSE 1), which we update annually in the spring.

When should I book my course?

In summer, we recommend booking in spring (between April and June) for the widest choice of days and times. If you call a few days before, there may still be places available but you'll need to adapt to the remaining availability.
Off-season, simply call a week ahead.

Can I take lessons if I've never surfed before?

It's actually highly recommended! The Côte-Sauvage can be dangerous for a novice without supervision. Lessons will help you progress much faster, safely, and gain understanding and independence to practice on your own afterward.

Are there discounts or promotions available?

For individuals, you get a 10% discount if you've attended in previous years and/or if you come in a group of 3 or more.
For groups of 8 or more, additional discounts apply. Please ask us for a quote.

Which is better: group lessons or private lessons?

Group lessons are suitable for a wide range of participants: from beginners to intermediate levels, come share and have fun with others! The group lesson (maximum 8 students per instructor) offers a great mix of serious and personalized progression, fun, and group interaction.
Private lessons are more suited for intermediate to advanced surfers: you'll receive a more comprehensive evaluation of your level (physical, mental, equipment, technique) and advice to apply in your future sessions.

Do you have facilities with showers and changing rooms?

No. As the name suggests, Côte-Sauvage is an extremely natural place and should remain so!
This coast is protected, and its forest managed by the National Forestry Office (ONF), so there are no shops, clubs, or restaurants. We change outdoors and head home with salty skin. That's the charm of surfing!

Do you provide transportation for students in a minibus?

Transportation is not provided; students must meet us at the designated meeting point on the coast.
Families and friends are welcome to come and enjoy the beach too, and perhaps cheer on their champions!

Are there toilets, shops, and restaurants at the lesson location?

As mentioned earlier, the dunes and forests of Coubre (Côte-Sauvage forest) are protected areas and almost devoid of construction. However, there are 3 first aid stations in July and August.
There are no toilets on the coast (but there's a forest...), so it's advisable to take precautions.
The nearest shops and restaurants are in La Palmyre or Ronce-les-Bains, a 10-minute drive north or south. These resorts are perfect for post-surf relaxation!

What payment methods are accepted?

We recommend online payment by Credit Card. If paying by check, holiday vouchers, or cash, please let us know beforehand.
